So, you may have noticed our world and our Church is going through a relatively turbulent time. If not, no worries and happy days! But if so – maybe the question has occurred to you as to how best to engage with the turbulence (if not chaos) in a spiritually fruitful and constructive way.
The fact is Heaven has given us a great many weapons given to us in order to help us in the spiritual battle. We have, but to name a few: the Sacraments and sacramentals of the Church, prayer, the Sacred Scriptures and a treasure trove of other spiritual reading, armies of angels and saints to call upon… So much so it can be difficult to know where to start sometimes! Whilst God calls us to walk with Him in trust, simplicity and peace, we can wind up feeling overwhelmed and intimidated by the very gifts He gives us to assure us of His Love.
For this reason, it can be helpful to pick out one gift, one weapon, and start with that. In doing the choosing, surely the best option, were it available, would be to allow Heaven to pick for us. Has Heaven chosen a consecration to the Immaculate Heart? If you decide to embark upon the consecration plan we outline, we will explore that question more thoroughly through the message of Our Lady of Fatima – but for now I want to have a look at two simple historically documented interactions of Heaven and Earth, both taking place in the same year.
In 1917, a Polish Conventual Franciscan, preparing to be ordained to the priesthood, witnessed freemasons marching on Rome, openly seeking the destruction of the Church. He was St. Maximilian Kolbe, and his response was to gather together with a small group of his brethren and form the Militia Immaculata. This movement hinged upon consecration to Our Lady, the Immaculate Conception.
Also in 1917, the Russian (Bolshevik) Revolution which led to the foundation of the Soviet Union began. Meanwhile, in Fátima, Portugal, Our Lady of the Rosary appeared to three young children and, amongst other things, informed them that she would be returning to request the consecration of Russia to Her Immaculate Heart…
Here we see twice, examples of great evils being met with the same response – Marian Consecration. Moreover, two specific evils, which can quite readily be argued to have sown seeds in 1917 that have come to fruition in our day. Freemasonry and Communism. If you doubt this, convincing you otherwise is not the task I intend to set about at this moment in time. What the devil does is not very interesting, helpful though it may be to know one’s enemy – in so far as that helps to evade his traps.
However, what cannot reasonably be disputed is that the recent events of the whole combined virus-and-reaction situation have caused and brought to the surface huge wounds in our world, and awoken much strife and confusion. Decision after decision has been taken in fear – and whilst virus casualties and fatalities have been tallied as we go, we have yet to come to grips with the long term damage of the whole situation to societies, economies and the personal lives of billions of people. Vast numbers of people have been cut off from the Sacraments for months on end. Differences of opinion on things like the origin and appropriate response to the crisis have divided nations, congregations and families. Normal human grieving, recovery and processing mechanisms have been largely on hold in a declared state of emergency, and we are in the dark as to when that state will end. In the midst of chaos and suffering, we are deeply, deeply in need of a Mother’s care and protection.
Thankfully, we have a Mother who not only desires to grant us this care and protection, but has already been promised the victory. The victory over evil in general because She stood at the foot of Her Son’s Cross as He conquered sin and death once and for all. The victory in a particular way over this present evil because through its defeat He desires to make Her known and loved.
It is time to step back from the uncertainty of the world’s difficulties and the chaos of the fallout of human planning to rest in faith in God’s Plan. To live in the assurance of the victory He has already won and to do our part to seek and to hasten the triumph of the Immaculate Heart, and the reign of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
At Golden Rose, we are aware that we are embarking upon something new in seeking to contribute something to the concrete reality of daily living of Marian Consecration in their lives. The obvious place to begin with this is to return again to a focus on … (to be finished)
